Editor'sNote Job 1: Improve the Bottom Line LEARNING! 100 WINNERS TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO PROFITS I f there's anything to be learned from top-fight learning organizations (profled in the Learning! 100 beginning on page 18), it's that their success does not hinge on how many learning courses they ofer or how many employees complete courses. Teir success depends on how the learning organization afects the "bottom line" — meaning net earnings or overall proft. Tis holds true not only for corporations but also for non-profts and government organizations, which can positively afect year-end performance versus budget by having a workforce that is more knowledgable and efcient. Here's what some of the Learning! 100 executives told us (many of whom will be speaking at the ELCE Virtual Event on October 3rd): Jenny Dearborn, SuccessFactors, an SAP Company: "We focus on business results and not traditional training or enablement results. We are fully geared toward business results." Dr. Christopher Hardy, Defense Acquisition University: "[One of our challenges was] building a strong business case for investing resources in the lab and convincing the CFO and senior leadership that this was a good, credible return on investment." Karl-Heinz Oehler, Te Hertz Corporation: "I … asked the business managers what they wanted and demonstrated to them that learning would generate monetary value to the bottom line. Once they vet the numbers coming out of fnance, they wouldn't be disputed any more." Mike Fitzgerald, National Archives and Records Administration: "First and foremost, [we] created a clear and convincing business case for staf at all levels of the agency. Our fnancial goal is to increase the amount of learning and development each employee receives by 16 hours [annually], without any increase in the agency's training budget." Brian Cooksey, Shaw Learning Academy: "SLA challenges our business to think beyond traditional answers and to work toward innovative solutions to complex problems. Additionally, SLA is an integral part of Shaw's mission statement of 'Great people. Great products. Great service. Always,' which underscores the importance of SLA to the overall business." Judy Whitcomb, Vi: "Vi recognizes and has proven that well-trained and engaged employees have a signifcant impact on Vi's resident satisfaction," which also has a positive impact on profts. Finally, a hearty congratulations to four organizations that earned both 2013 Learning! 100 and Best of Elearning! honors. Tese organizations "walk the talk" in learning and performance. Congratulations to SuccessFactors, an SAP Company (pictured on cover), IBM, Oracle and Cisco. We proudly salute all of the 2013 Learning! 100 winners featured in this issue. —Jerry Roche, Editorial director 8 August / September 2013 Elearning!
