Elearning! News Depreciation for Knowledge Loss? Determining the value of human capital as it relates to accumulated knowledge has always been a challenge for corporate financial officers, some of whom are now appar- ently trying to claim knowledge loss as depreciation on their tax returns. Until recently, no company has been willing to put on its annual report a veri- fiable number that is recognized as knowledge capital, because nobody knows how to com- pute it. But Elliott Masie of the Masie Center tells us that several cases related to knowledge management and the tax implications of outdated skills and information are making their way through tax court this year. "Three Fortune 500 companies have taken the bold move of attempting to declare an accelerated depreciation deduction for loss of knowledge in their workforce," Masie wrote in his recent newsletter. "For example, one technology company has calculated that its system changes almost 34 percent each year. Therefore, its balance sheet of workforce knowledge should reflect a 34 percent depreciation or loss each year." The fate of knowledge loss as a tax deductible, it appears, is soon to be determined.
