News New Currency for Top Talent: Freedom The new "currency" for top-tier talent is freedom according to Tim Houlne and Terri Maxwell, authors of "The New World of Work: From the Cube to the Cloud." Freedom and fexibility are now desirable corporate traits, since traditional benefts such as insurance and paid vacations are not part of this "new world of work." To capitalize on this new work currency, companies must: >> Manage the process and outcome, not the people. >> Utilize more peer-to-peer management to encourage collaboration. >> Invest in cloud technology to manage projects. >> Understand virtual collaboration both from a technology and communication standpoint in order to get the best ideas. >> Understand that physical presence does not improve creativity. —More info: www.newworldofwork.com 3 Mistakes to Avoid with Cloud Vendors Selecting a vendor to work with is a crucial step in any cloud project. Choose the wrong vendor and you could end up with security disasters, outages, or project failures. Three mistakes that businesses make when selecting a cloud vendor: Selecting cloud services based on features alone You need a healthy vendor that has good security practices and quality service. However, "we've seen businesses shocked with unexpected costs for integration, testing and ongoing maintenance," says Damian Bramanis of InspectorJones.com, "or support teams that aren't available when you need them. Vendor lock-in can also be a nasty surprise, where exit costs are so high it prevents you from leaving the service." Assuming services will ft your organization While a cloud service might look great, many projects fail because people didn't consider how it will ft their workfow, corporate branding, integration with I.T. systems, mobile or desktop environment. If a new system forces unnecessary change to the way people work, or requires them to remember a new username and password, expect backlash. Spending too little time investigating other customers' experiences "We always recommend clients speak to other real-world customers," says Damian Bramanis, Enterprise Architect, University of Western Australia. —More info: www.inspectorjones.com 1 2 3 12 June / July 2013 Elearning!
